RENDELL CALLS ON NFL TO MAKE HELMETS OPTIONAL

HARRISBURG - Citing the success of Pennsylvania's optional motorcycle helmet law that he signed into law three years ago, Governor Edward G. Rendell today called on the NFL to "loosen up its strict rules" requiring helmets. "Our motorcycle helmet law in Pennsylvania celebrates individual choice and freedom," said the Governor. "The NFL should follow suit."

Rendell suggested that his favorite team, the Philadelphia Eagles, should still require its players to wear helmets, "but other teams," including the Eagles' cross-state rivals the Pittsburgh Steelers, "should not feel any such compulsion."
